Classic RTS game Warhammer 40k Dawn of War is getting a complete remaster
Warhammer 40k’s version of Command and Conquer and Age of Empires, the beloved RTS game Dawn of War is getting a huge new remaster.
by Ed Smith · PCGamesNAn endless battle encompassing hundreds of thousands of soldiers. Dozens of factions, all outfitted with their own weaponry, armor, and physical abilities. Warhammer 40k is built for the RTS genre – it's where the Space Marines and Chaos feel most at home. Almost 20 years on, Dawn of War remains one of the best-loved games in the entire 40k canon. Developed by Relic, the studio behind Company of Heroes and the gorgeous anniversary edition of Age of Empires 4, it's like a bulky, grimy reimagining of Command and Conquer, combining classic real-time mechanics with the defining Warhammer art style. And now, it's coming back. A new Dawn of War remaster is officially in the works.
Even to this day, Dawn of War still holds an 'overwhelmingly positive' rating on Steam. We already have the Anniversary Edition, which combines the base RTS game and the expansions into one bundle. Now, as revealed at Warhammer Skulls, Dawn of War is getting a transformative makeover courtesy of the new Definitive Edition. This is the original game, optimized for modern PCs. You get all four of the classic Dawn of War campaigns, nine armies, and more than 200 maps. Again, all the expansions are included, and the Definitive Edition is totally compatible with historic Dawn of War mods.
Textures are upscaled, there's 4K support, and world lighting, reflections, and shadows have all been improved. You also have access to a new in-game camera to get a better view of the battlefield and the interface has been reworked to better suit widescreen monitors.
Created by Relic itself, the studio says that its goal with Dawn of War Definitive Edition is to "preserve the legacy" of the original game, while simultaneously improving its visuals for more modern machines. We don't have a release date yet, but the remaster of Dawn of War is scheduled to be released before the end of 2025.
In the meantime, check out some of the other best Warhammer 40k games, or maybe the best Warhammer games overall.
