Nov. 14 (UPI) -- The Asylum announced in a press release Friday that a new Sharkando film is in the works. Sharknado Origins will be in production this year for a 2026 release.

The Sharknado franchise aired a film annually on SyFy from 2013 to 2018. The sixth film was called The Last Sharknado, intended to conclude the franchise.

However, there is precedent for horror franchises continuing past an alleged final chapter. Neither Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter nor Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday were the last Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th movies.-

The Sharknado films starred Ian Ziering as Fin Shepard, who unwittingly became an expert in battling tornadoes filled with sharks. Tara Reid also starred in all six films as April Wexler.

Variety reports that Sharkando Origins is a prequel film about teenage Fin and April. Casting is to be announced.

Some of the sequels featured guest stars like David Hasselhoff, Bo Derek, Bret Michaels, Marc Cuban, Nichelle Nichols and more.

Anthony Ferrante directed all six and Variety confirmed he is returning for the seventh. Cassandra Scerbo appeared in three of the sequels.
