Liam Payne's final TV role set to air in Netflix series filmed before his tragic death
by Tianna Corbin, https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/authors/tianna-corbin/, Lauren Morris · Birmingham LiveNetflix has shared a touching update; the beloved Liam Payne, who sadly died last October at the age of 31 due to a tragic fall, will appear in the upcoming talent show Building the Band later this year.
The ex-One Direction member, who met an untimely death following a fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, is set to be featured as a guest judge on the show, alongside Destiny's Child legend Kelly Rowland.
The new series, which aims to form a pop group comprising individuals who collaborate without ever meeting in person, is expected to debut later in 2025 and was filmed before Liam's death.
With a format reminiscent of Love Is Blind, focusing more on harmonious blend and charisma rather than physical looks, it is anticipated to charm viewers, reports The Mirror.
Netflix intrigued its audience with a synopsis stating: "The singers are in complete control as they seek to form their very own bands in individual 'booths' without ever seeing each other. All they have to go on is musical compatibility, connection, chemistry and merit."
Curiosity mounts regarding how the dynamic will evolve once the musicians unite, integrating visual and performance aspects into their collaborations.
Adding to this, Netflix expressed: "What will happen when the bands finally meet, and looks, choreography, and style come into play? With incredible performances, compelling drama, and one big goal - to find the next great music band - the stage is set for an unforgettable experience."
Netflix had delayed the launch of a series featuring Liam, who tragically died, with the filming having wrapped weeks before his demise.
An insider disclosed that the service hadn't scrapped the project, explaining: "It is too soon to make a decision, but the show has definitely not been shelved. Filming was completed at the end of summer. Netflix will sit down with Liam's family when the time is right to speak about the series and when it could be released.
"Everyone involved is devastated and their heart goes out to his family. There is no rush or pressure to release the series. It would simply be a beautiful tribute to Liam and capture him at his best in the months before his death."
The show is expected to join this year's Netflix roster, with AJ McClean of Backstreet Boys fame hosting and Nicole Scherzinger providing mentorship and judging talents. Although the series is part of the line-up, a specific release date is yet to be announced.
Nicole Scherzinger had previously met Liam during his 2010 stint on The X Factor, where she contributed to the formation of One Direction. One of Liam's last endeavours, the show captures the essence of his final months.
In addition, Liam worked with Sam Pounds, a North Carolinian artist, on a track called Do No Wrong. Following Liam's death, Sam put the release on hold, to allow the family privacy to grieve.
Liam tragically lost his life after a devastating fall from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A post-mortem examination disclosed that he died on impact, suffering "multiple traumatic injuries" that resulted in "internal and external haemorrhage".
Speculation was rife earlier this week about a potential One Direction reunion during the BRIT Awards as a tribute to Liam. An insider told The Sun: "The tribute to Liam at this year's awards show has caused a real buzz and speculation that the remaining One Direction bandmates could finally come back together again on stage."
"It would be an entirely fitting way to honour Liam and talks are already under way about how to make this segment of the BRITs unforgettable."
