Beloved Co-Op Platformer It Takes Two Has Sold a Whopping 20 Million Copies

It Takes Two-enty million

by · Push Square

Hazelight Studios, developer of the co-op platformer It Takes Two, has announced the game has now sold over 20 million copies.

The news comes via social posts as the game reaches this impressive milestone:

Studio founder Josef Fares says the figure is "beyond my wildest dreams".

Published by EA Originals, It Takes Two released in 2021 to critical acclaim. It tells the story of a struggling couple on the verge of divorce, whose daughter wishes for things to improve — turning her parents into toys and forcing them to overcome their differences.

Playable only in two-player co-op, the game has players working together in numerous ingenious ways, with the gameplay changing things up as the adventure progresses. It's a super varied and fun experience, and has clearly resonated with a lot of people.

We do wonder how many of those 20 million reached the infamous Cutie the Elephant scene, which you can read more about in our exclusive interview with Fares.

If I had at least one friend it would sell 20 000 001 copies by now

@Czar_Khastik Surely that would be 20,000,002 given the nature of the game?

I hope EA takes notes and starts releasing yearly "It Takes Two" titles. I'll be awaiting It Takes Two 26.

Congratulations to them!

May they continue to grow as a studio

@SheerDisappointment Although I didn't think about it when I posted, actually it seems that 1 copy of the game is enough because there is a "friends pass" feature that supposedly lets a friend download an "unlicensed" copy from PSN which he can play only as a guest of the primary buyer's session.

I'm curious what the sales numbers would have been if they didn't have that Friend's Pass where you can play with someone who didn't buy the game. Using Corpo logic they'd assume they should have sold at least 40M copies, but I'd suspect it would have sold far far less than 20M if that wasn't the case.

@Czar_Khastik Oh cool, I wasn't actually aware that was a thing this game had, so I've actually learned something there! With that in mind, the original comment makes total sense.

Mind blowing, especially when you consider that Super Mario World on the SNES only sold 20.6 million copies world wide. Also alot of the Mario world games would have actually been packed in with the SNES.

Admittedly alot more people are into video games in 2024 compared to the mid 90's but still, impressive none the less

One of the best games I've ever played tbh

That's fantastic news and clearly shows that great sales dont always depend on milking an IP, and inventive well crafted games can win big!

I'll never play this one - considering you absolutely HAVE to have someone to play with - but it's always great to see platformers do so well!

I mean, it was game of the year for a reason...

Wow that is fantastic!

Incredible game, the praise and sales are well deserved.

Quite funny that you get this news and the "there's not creativity in gaming now" articles back to back!

Strange times

Insert joke about Square saying this is a underwhelming number

Anyways, It Takes Two is a damn good game and I'm happy it reached the 20M milestone.

Well deserved, the game is incrediable.

Well deserved. A rare game with creative ideas. Such kinds of games are rare today.

That is kind of true. You can invite a friend that does not have the game to your session, however, that is only good for the first level. If they would want to continue after that, they would have to purchase their own copy of the game. While I absolutely think that it is worth it as ITT is a wonderful game, I do think it is a little slimy to have folks think that they can play with anyone that does not own the complete game.

Josef is quietly one of the best directors and brightest minds in the industry. I'm all for my single player epics but games, imo, are truly meant to be played together in meaningful ways. The fact he and his team had game mechanics you'd use for one hour that was more polished and fun than developers that base their entire game around those mechanics is nothing short of amazing

20 comments, eh? It'd be a shame if someone commented again...

(still can't understand how games like this -which seems brilliant, but isn't high profile- can sell 20m copies, whereas games that get far more attention don't sell anywhere near as much)

@Svark you can actually play the whole game if your friend owns the full version. If two people with the friend pass play they only get the first level.

I’m responsible for 2 of those purchases. Fantastic game. Fantastic studio. Can’t wait for their next game!!!
