Will the Resident Evil Series Be Over in the Next 10 Years? Of Course Not

Producer's comments don't line up with the headlines

Headlines based on a Capcom producer's comments this week have suggested the Resident Evil series may end within the next decade.

Setting aside the fact the actual quotes don't quite suggest that, the suggestion would mean the firm is saying goodbye to its best-selling IP — and that is not going to happen in a world where brand names are more important to companies than ever before, especially after a successful film adaptation.

Speaking to Yahoo Japan, executive producer Jun Takeuchi explained: "The series' story wasn't planned out from the beginning; it expanded with each new game. When we were planning Resident Evil 2 [remake] and creating a 10-year branding concept, this was the most challenging aspect."

"If you play through all of them, I think you'll realise the meaning behind the order of the remakes," Takeuchi continued. “With the release of Requiem this year, I feel like the first 10 years have come to a close, so I think the conclusion will come in the next 10 years."

The Capcom executive does indeed speak of a "conclusion" coming in the next decade, but what Takeuchi is referring to here is the current storyline, not the series as a whole. The developer has previously discussed how it'll eventually reach a point where the remakes and the new Resident Evil entries catch up to one another, and it has plans for when that happens.

It's anticipating a "crossover" in the future, and perhaps that will be the conclusion to this current Resident Evil saga.

However, as Resident Evil 7: Biohazard proves, Capcom has reimagined the series in the past. The franchise existed before this current storyline, and it will once it's done too.

It also wouldn't make any financial sense for Capcom to simply move on from the Resident Evil series entirely. Only yesterday, its latest financial report revealed the IP has sold 218 million copies. The latest entry, Resident Evil Requiem, has contributed 8.5 million units to that total since release.

Resident Evil 2 has now sold over 20 million copies, Resident Evil 4 is close behind at 17.1 million, and even the heavily criticised Resident Evil 3 remake has managed 14.9 million sales.

This storied series is going nowhere.

They will do a Resident Evil 3 Remake: Remake.

RE6 almost got the franchise put on ice forever and it was only thanks to their gamble with RE7 we are even in the fortunate situation. But all honesty I love Resident evil it's my favourite franchise and I will continue to play them.

@Czar_Khastik and it will be exactly 1 hour long.
