A groundbreaking ceremony for the Forever One Memorial, which will honor the victims of the Oct. 1, 2017, mass shooting on the Strip, was held Friday afternoon.

The groundbreaking happened at the corner of Reno Avenue and Giles Street, off Las Vegas Boulevard, on the grounds of where the Route 91 Harvest country musical festival took place.

A gunman opened fire on the festival from the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay at about 10:05 p.m. that night. A total of 60 victims died. The shooting initially left 58 concertgoers dead and hundreds more injured. Thirty-one victims died at the scene, 27 succumbed to their wounds at area hospitals, and the final two victims died more than two years after the shooting.

Thursday was the ninth anniversary of the massacre.
