· GOSS.iePaul Mescal missed out on a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture on Sunday night.
The Irish actor was nominated for his role as William Shakespeare in Hamnet, but lost out to Stellan Skarsgård for his performance in Sentimental Value.
While Paul was unsuccessful in his category, his co-star Jessie Buckley scooped the gong for Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama for her role as Shakespeare’s wife Agnes.
The film, which is based on Maggie O’Farrell’s book about the death of Shakespeare’s son, which inspired him to write Hamlet, also took home the award for Best Motion Picture, Drama.
During her acceptance speech, Jessie said: “This is not a normal feeling or situation to be in. But thank you, Golden Globes. Thank you, Focus [Features], and everybody who supported this film.”
Jessie gave a shout out to the filn’s director Chloé Zhao, her co-star Paul, author Maggie O’Farrell, and all the cast and crew of the film, including the 400 extras.
“I adore you,” she said. “I would rave in that Globe [Theatre] for the rest of my life with you.”
“It was such an extraordinary set to be a part of – a film about the most famous Brit who ever lived, with a Chinese director, a lot of Irish, mostly Polish crew, alongside our British family.”
In a hilariously off-script moment, Jessie also thanked one of the Polish crew members for making soup on set, before paying tribute to her fellow nominees.
“Oh my God, the incredible women I am honoured to stand beside in this category. I mean, Julia Roberts, you are a hero to us all. Jennifer [Lawrence], Renate [Reinsve], Eva [Victor], Tessa [Thompson], I’d watch you anytime, anywhere. You blow my mind.
Concluding her speech, Jessie added: “My husband, he’s really been enjoying the free canapes and cocktails. So, thank you so much. This is a real, real honour. I love what I do, and I love being part of this industry. Thank you.”
