Bosses on the HBO series, which began shooting in August, reportedly secretly approached the actor.
According to reports, Bill has taken part in screen tests to play a Hogwarts potions master.
An insider said: “It has been very ‘hush-hush,’ but Bill was thrilled to take part in screen tests for the role last month.”
They continued to The Sun: “He wants it, the Potter production team want it, and now it’s a waiting game until contracts are signed. It will be a real coup to have Bill join a stellar cast.”
Bill previously expressed his delight at being cast in the new audio production, saying: “I was pleased to be asked to play the professor after having already played a minister for magic.”
“I’m always grateful when asked to play academics, having not been further educated myself.”
In the first films, Bill played Rufus Scrimgeour, the Minister of Wizardry.
Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley, while Arabella Stanton will play Hermione Granger. Dominic McLaughlin has been cast as Harry Potter.
Rory Wilmot will portray Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson will play Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey will play Madam Rolanda Hooch, and Anton Lesser, who is best known for playing Qyburn in Game of Thrones, will play Garrick Ollivander.
Earlier this year, Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby were named Mr. and Mrs. Dursley.
In the adaptation, actor and comedian Nick Frost will portray the renowned Hogwarts groundskeeper Hagrid.
The 42-year-old Johnny Flynn will portray Lucius, the father of Draco Malfoy, who was portrayed in the film by Jason Isaacs.
John Lithgow, an Emmy winner, has also agreed to play Headmaster Albus Dumbledore.
