The former Stone Roses and Primal Scream bass player died at his home in Stockport on 20 November at the age of 63.
Stone Roses Ian Brown described his bandmate as “a brother to me” and a “beautiful human being” as he arrived for the bass player’s funeral.
Along with some of the biggest figures in British 90s music, such as Liam Gallagher, Paul Weller, Bobbie Gillespie, and Bez from the Happy Mondays, Ian Brown appeared at Manchester Cathedral on Monday.
Hundreds of mourners attended the service, including former Manchester United stars Gary Neville and David Beckham.
The Stone Roses song “I Wanna Be Adored” was playing on speakers as hundreds more admirers waited outside the cathedral and cheered as the cortege arrived, preceded by a guard of scooter riders.
Along with singer Ian Brown, guitarist John Squire, and drummer Alan “Reni” Wren, Gary was a member of The Stone Roses’ iconic lineup.
Later on, he joined Primal Scream.
Stone Roses drummer Alan Wren, also known as Reni, was joined by bandmate John Squire and Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher in carrying the coffin after the service.
Mounfield’s coffin was decorated with the classic artwork from The Stone Roses’ first album.
The father of two was last spotted in public with Oasis star Liam Gallagher in October at the burial of renowned boxer Ricky Hatton.
A few weeks later, the rock star’s family shared the heartbreaking news of his passing on social media, which prompted floods of condolences from all over the world.
His nephew posted on X: “Unfortunately with sad news my uncle Gary Mani Mounfield from the Stone Roses has sadly passed away today.”
“Thinking of his twins and my uncle Greg at this sad time. He will be reunited in heaven with his lovely wife Imelda. RIP Mani.”
