Nick Reiner, the son of movie director Rob Reiner, was arrested on suspicion of murder Monday in the deaths of the Hollywood entertainment industry legend and his wife Michele a day after the couple was found dead in their Los Angeles home, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

In a statement late Monday morning, the LAPD confirmed the arrest of 32-year-old Nick Reiner after Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead Sunday inside the home in Los Angeles' Brentwood area. The department said Nick Reiner was being held without bail on suspicion of murder.

Law enforcement sources with direct knowledge of the investigation told NBCLA earlier Monday that Nick Reiner, 32, was being jailed on suspicion of murder in the deaths of his parents. Jail records showed the arrest was at 5:04 a.m. California time Monday by LAPD detectives.

It was not immediately known if Nick Reiner has legal representation. The case will be presented to county prosecutors for consideration of criminal charges.

The bodies of Rob, 78, and Michele Reiner, 68 were discovered Sunday afternoon at the couple's home and pronounced dead by LA Fire Department paramedics. A source close to Reiner confirmed to NBC News that Reiner and his wife had apparent stab wounds.

The medical examiner has not provided details about an official cause of death. Details about a possible motive in the killings were not immediately available from police.

Police sealed off the home and surrounding streets while conducting their investigation of the crime scene overnight.

Rob Reiner is an Oscar-nominated filmmaker and actor known for his films "This Is Spinal Tap," "A Few Good Men," and "When Harry Met Sally."

In 2015, Rob and Nick Reiner worked on a coming-of-age film together called "Being Charlie." Directed by Rob Reiner and co-written by Nick Reiner, the film explored the relationship between a son and father. In a 2016 interview with the Associated Press, they talked about the film.

"It forced us to understand ourselves better than we had," Rob Reiner told the AP. "I told Nick while we were making it, I said, 'You know it doesn’t matter, whatever happens to this thing, we won already. This has already been good.' We've worked through a lot of stuff."

Nick Reiner was the second of the couple's three children. Older brother Jake had a small role in "Being Charlie." Younger sister Romy also is an actor.

In September, the family appeared together at the Los Angeles premiere of "Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues.'

"Being Charlie" featured actor Cary Elwes, famous for appearing in Reiner's classic "The Princess Bride," as the main character's father. The plot focuses on a young man struggling with addiction who has been in and out of rehab.

Reiner reflected on the real-life challenges and how they influenced the movie in an interview with the LA Times in 2015.

"It was very, very hard going through it the first time, with these painful and difficult highs and lows," Rob Reiner said. "And then making the movie dredged it all up again."

Nick Reiner has spoken publicly over the years about his struggles with drug addiction, which began in his teens. He told People in an interview in 2016 that he cycled in and out of treatment facilities with bouts of homelessness and relapses in between.

“I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun," Nick Reiner told People, adding that, "If I wanted to do it my way and not go to the programs they were suggesting, then I had to be homeless."
