Love Is Not What It Seems In First Teaser for M. Night Shyamalan’s Remain Starring Jake Gyllenhaal

Back not a moment too soon (and off one of his best films), M. Night Shyamalan has directed Remain, a VistaVision-shot romantic thriller that arrives on February 5. Ahead of this comes a first preview of Jake Gyllenhaal and Sophie Dynevor’s less-than-normal romantic dynamic and the work of DP Adolpho Veloso (Train Dreams), plus—why not—a Mitski song.

Here’s the super-concise synopsis: “She’s unlike anybody he’s ever met.” Shyamalan’s film has also been described as a “supernatural romantic thriller,” which is like asking Michael Jordan to make a free throw, layup, and slam dunk. (I’m running out of basketball metaphors to encapsulate it; let’s just establish that I’m excited.) Though the collaboration with über-hack Nicholas Sparks gives one pause, Shyamalan is simply unparalleled at turning material from eye-rolling to eye-welling. Also: Julie Hagerty is in this?
