Natural ice rinks open across Netherlands on cold Christmas Day

Residents across the Netherlands may be able to take advantage of cold temperatures on Christmas Day as natural ice rinks are opening in several locations, including De Lier, Zeist, and Noordwijk.

On Christmas Day, temperatures across much of the country are likely to remain below freezing. However, forecasts indicate that by Friday afternoon, the mercury may rise above freezing in many areas, creating uncertainty about whether natural ice skating will still be possible on Boxing Day.

Ice masters in Noordwijk are preparing the Jonkheer Geversbaan rink overnight to ensure a safe skating surface, according to Omroep West. The Noordwijkse IJsclub announced on Instagram that they will keep the rink open "as long as it remains safe." Skaters can start using the rink from 9 a.m., with admission set at 3 euros for children up to 12 years old and 5 euros for adults.

In De Lier, the Hard Gaat-ie ice rink is also opening, welcoming both members and non-members from 8:30 a.m. Non-members pay 2.50 euros for adults and 1 euro for children. The ice association said, “Although the temperatures were somewhat high, the clear night provided exactly the magic needed." Yes, and then you make ice.”

Zeist is preparing its natural ice rink as well, though conditions are reportedly challenging. Ice master Koen Koster told local media, “How long can the rink remain open? No idea, we will see.”

The setup faced delays as temperatures initially refused to drop sufficiently, and a trailer carrying a water tank suffered a flat tire before ice could be made.
