Harvey Weinstein sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexual assault after New York retrial
NEW YORK - Harvey Weinstein was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006. After an overturned conviction and two subsequent mistrials, the sentencing marks a major endpoint in the New York chapter of the nine-year courtroom saga that ignited the global #MeToo movement. Barring another successful appeal, Weinstein will remain behind bars under his new New York sentence. Next, Weinstein will face resentencing in California for raping and sexually assaulting Italian model and actor Evgeniya Chernyshova at a Los Angeles hotel in 2013. Judge Curtis Farber says it’s up to California to determine whether the sentences will run concurrently or consecutively. No date has been set. The disgraced Hollywood producer, 74, has faced a series of health issues in recent years, including chronic myeloid leukemia, diabetes and significant mobility problems.
