More storm warnings issued for Friday in Latvia
· Latvian Public MediaAn orange warning (danger) was originally issued Friday morning for thunderstorms with strong wind gusts of 20-24 metres per second, very heavy rain and possible hailstones. The warning was later upgraded to red (high danger) in parts of northern Vidzeme and Latgale.
"Thunderstorms with strong wind gusts exceeding 25 m/s, extremely heavy rains and locally large hail are expected in the northeastern regions of Latvia. The thunderstorm will continue until midnight," said the Latvian Environment Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC).
A yellow (potentially dangerous) weather warning has been issued for parts of the southern Zemgale region with the more serious orange (dangerous) and red (very dangerous) warnings covering Vidzeme and Latgale regions plus northern parts of Kurzeme region.
During the afternoon, rain and storm clouds will form across the country, and in the late afternoon and evening, thunderstorms will start to burst with intense downpours causing temporary flooding, large hailstones and strong winds.
Thunderstorms could significantly affect outdoor activities including the cancellation of events.
