Our belly fat is a signal – Dr Vanessa Apea urges health checks

Dr Vanessa Apea, Founder, CEO and Medical Director of The Accra London Health Centre, has urged people not to ignore excess belly fat, saying it can be a warning sign of health problems affecting the body.

She said abdominal fat can affect organs and is linked to issues such as blood pressure, making it important for people to have themselves checked.

“Our belly fat is a signal and you need to go and be investigated,” Dr Apea said on GTV Breakfast show.

She urged people to know their waist circumference and blood pressure instead of assuming that being overweight cannot be changed.

“Know your waist circumference, know your blood pressure. Go and have that conversation,” she said.

Dr Apea said people who already have significant weight should not give up on improving their health.

“Some people think, oh, you know, I’m already big now. What’s the point? It’s not going to change. It can change,” she said.

According to her, reducing visceral fat around the organs can improve long-term health.

“It can improve that visceral fat around your organs that’s affecting your longer term health,” she added.

She also urged people to consider their diet, exercise, alcohol consumption, smoking and sleep as part of efforts to improve their health.

“Go and get checked out, know your numbers and get the support you need,” Dr Apea said.
