An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck off the east coast of Japan's largest and most populous island, Honshu, on Thursday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), the agency said.
The situation is being closely monitored and authorities are assessing the need for further action or public safety measures.
An earthquake jolted the Kansai region on Wednesday evening, recording 3 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in parts of Kyoto and Hyogo prefectures, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. No tsunami advisories were issued.
