Ocean warming rate accelerates by four times than last four decades, says study
by KalingaTV Bureau · KalingaTVThe oceans are the lifeblood of our planet, and they are getting warmer at an alarming rate. When we compare the bathtub full of hot water in the 1980s, the tap was running slowly but now it’s gushing, and warming is accelerating fast. This is the stark reality revealed by a new study that shows the rate of warming of sea surface temperature has gone up by over four times over the past 40 years.
According to the lead author of the study, Professor Chris Merchant from the University of Reading, the imperative now is for urgent action. He says, “We are seeing the real impacts of climate change, with increased sea levels, extreme weather events, and ruinous impacts on global food production. It’s our time to be responsible and high stakes”.
This research findings reveals that the oceans are warming by 0.27 degrees Celsius per decade between 2019 and 2023, means they have broken their record heat 450 times consecutively by record sea surface temperatures. With this situation, if the level of greenhouse emission is not cut down, while transitioning to fuel-free systems, the next 20 years would be able to surpass the warmth of the past 40 years, and there would be massive catastrophes.
Let us unite ourselves and urge our politicians and other world leaders to take action. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and generations that will come and give them a sustainable tomorrow. Time is running out faster and the seas warn us with signals. Will we heed the call and do something about it or become victims of catastrophic impacts of climate change? The choice is ours.
