Senior Labour MP says Donald Trump SHOULD get the Nobel Peace Prize

A senior Labour MP has backed calls for Donald Trump to be given the Nobel Peace Prize next year if he helps bring an end to the Middle East crisis.

Dame Emily Thornberry, the chair of the House of Commons' foreign affairs committee, said 'of course' the US President should receive the prestigious award.

'I'll wear a MAGA hat personally!,' she quipped, when asked if Mr Trump was deserving of the prize.

The US President has received widespread praise for his role in brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

The two sides have agreed to a pause in the two-year war in Gaza under a deal pushed by Mr Trump.

Hamas has also agreed to release the remaining hostages it holds, in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

Both Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper have dodged saying whether the US President should be given the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.

This is despite Sir Keir saying the ceasefire 'would not have happened without' Mr Trump's leadership.

But Dame Emily, who has been a fierce critic of the US President on other issues, had no qualms in backing Mr Trump to receive the award.

On Friday, it was announced that Venezuelan democracy campaigner María Corina Machado had won this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's The World Tonight on Thursday, Dame Emily suggested it would have been too early for Mr Trump to get this year's prize - but backed him to get next year's honour.

'Not this week,' she said. 'There were people claiming the reason he wanted to do it quickly was because he wanted to have the Peace Prize on Friday.

'That's not going to happen. There will be one coming in a year's time.

'If we continue to move forward and it isn't just a ceasefire but we are getting a political solution and Donald Trump is playing his part in that, then sure.

'If he can help to get us to a position where there's peace in the Middle East, for heaven's sake of course he should get the Peace Prize.

Ms Cooper repeatedly dodged on whether the US President should receive the honour for his role in the Gaza ceasefire.

She told LBC on Friday morning: 'I'm strongly supporting the work that President Trump is doing. It's an independent process. I'm not going to cut across that process.'
