A huge fire has broken out at a synagogue in Salford as fire engines rush to the scene.

Enormous plumes of smoke were seen billowing from Satmar V'Yoel Moshe Orthodox synagogue on Northumberland Street.

Police confirmed that the fire began at roughly 5pm today as six fire engines were called.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: 'Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus arrived quickly and are using hose reels to control the fire while Greater Manchester Police cordon the road.

'Crews are working with partner agencies to bring the fire under control and keep residents safe. The road currently remains closed.'

Friday is an important day for the Jewish community as it marks the beginning of the Sabbath.

It is believed that it could be an electrical fire after the blaze started in offices on the top floor of the building, Manchester Evening News report.

As fire services continue to remain in the area, the fire has now been extinguished.

This is a breaking story. More to follow.
