JAMB clarifies meanings of ‘Not Admitted’, ‘Admission in Progress’ on CAPS
by Moronfolu Adeyemi · The Eagle OnlineThe Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has explained the meanings of the “Not Admitted,” “Admission in Progress” and “Admitted” statuses displayed on candidates’ Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).
JAMB gave the clarification in an explainer video shared on Thursday, advising candidates to continue checking their CAPS for updates as the admission process progresses.
The Board explained that the “Not Admitted” status simply means that a candidate has not been offered admission yet, stressing that it does not necessarily mean the candidate will not eventually gain admission.
JAMB said: “This simply means you’ve not been offered admission yet.
“However, it does not necessarily mean you will not be admitted.”
It advised candidates whose status remains “Not Admitted” to keep checking their CAPS for possible updates.
On the “Admission in Progress” status, the Board said it could mean that an institution had proposed a candidate for admission but the process had not been concluded.
JAMB said: “This means your institution’s admission officer has proposed you for admission, but awaiting the head of institution’s recommendation.”

It added that the status could also apply where the head of an institution had recommended a candidate but the admission was still awaiting JAMB’s approval or disapproval.
The Board, however, warned candidates against assuming that “Admission in Progress” amounted to secured admission.
JAMB said: “Please note that ‘Admission in Progress’ does not mean automatic admission.”
According to the Board, a recommended admission offer could still be rejected if the candidate failed to meet the required conditions.
JAMB stated: “This is because the recommended offer could still be disapproved by the Board if you don’t meet the prerequisite requirements.”
The Board explained that a candidate’s status changes to “Admitted” after JAMB officially approves the admission offer.
JAMB said: “This is the point you get the message, ‘CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE BEEN OFFERED ADMISSION’.”
It added that candidates who receive the official admission offer would then be able to accept or reject it through CAPS.
JAMB further noted that candidates’ CAPS statuses could change at different stages of the admission process.
The Board said: “Remember, your CAPS status will keep changing as the admission process continues until the final stage where you print your admission letter.”
JAMB advised candidates to continue checking their CAPS and rely on its official channels for verified information on the admission process.
