Police launch search for abducted 17-year-old university student

Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have launched a search operation following the abduction of a 17-year-old student of Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Mary Ezinwayi Uzoma.

The 100-level Microbiology student was reportedly kidnapped along the FUTO/Ihiagwa Road in Owerri West Local Government Area.

Police said a coordinated rescue effort began immediately, involving local vigilantes and intensive searches of surrounding bushes and nearby areas.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, said the Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, had directed the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to take over the case.

He said: “The directives are part of proactive measures aimed at ensuring the safe rescue of the victim and the swift arrest of the perpetrators.”

Okoye said intelligence-led operations have been intensified in collaboration with other security agencies.

He added: “The CP has reinforced security deployment across the FUTO axis and adjoining communities, with sustained patrols, surveillance, and visibility policing already ongoing.”

The command assured students, school authorities and residents of continued protection.

He said: “The Imo State Police Command remains proactive and resolute in its mandate to prevent crime, protect lives, and property.”

Police urged members of the public to support the investigation with credible information.

He said: “Members of the public with useful information are encouraged to report at the nearest police station or contact 0803 477 3600.”
