Breaking: Senate adopts electronic, manual transmission of election results

by · The Eagle Online

The Senate on Tuesday unanimously adopted both electronic and manual modes of transmitting election results.

The two system of transmission of results were adopted by the Senate on Tuesday at a special session it called on Sunday.

This also followed two days of protest at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja by Nigerians over the failure to adopt immediate electronic transmission of election results.

At the resumption of the emergency session, the Senate modified Clause 60 to require the presiding officer at each polling unit to electronically transmit election results to the IREV portal.

However, if electronic transmission fails due to communication/network issues, the manual result sheet (Form EC8A) would become the primary source for result collation.

The motion of amendment was moved by Senate Minority Whip, Mohammed Tahir Munguno, who proposed that the upper chamber rescinds its approval of clause 60(3) of the Electoral Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2026.

Monguno said the motion became necessary after “fresh issues” emerged from a closer scrutiny of the bill following its passage earlier in February.

He noted that the provision required further legislative work to avoid ambiguities that could undermine the conduct of elections.

The motion was seconded by the Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, who aligned himself with the call for a further review.

But Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, who raised a point of order, insisted that the Senate could not revisit the clause in the manner proposed.

The senator from Abia State said the very least is that senators should be allowed to vote individually on the matter.

However, when the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, asked whether Abaribe intended to formally proceed with the point of order he had raised, he declined.

He rather decided to go ahead with the motion paving the way for plenary to resume.
