Turkish sources report that a large security force has surrounded İmamoğlu’s home.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, widely seen as President Erdoğan’s main political rival, is being taken into custody after a large-scale police raid on his residence. The arrest comes just a day after İmamoğlu’s university diploma was revoked, a decision that could bar him from running for the presidency, as a university degree is a constitutional requirement for candidacy in Turkey.

While being taken into custody, İmamoğlu characterized the turn of events as a coup.
