Multiple Drones Spotted Over Military Base Housing Weapons

Unmanned aerial vehicles were spotted over a German military base in the western part of the country, which houses a large underground storage facility, the Bundeswehr’s operational command confirmed to Agence France-Presse on Friday.

The security centre at the military facility in Mechernich detected two drones on Thursday evening and alerted police, who went to the site and launched an investigation.

The military command declined to provide further details.

German media, including Süddeutsche Zeitung and WDR, reported that employees of a private security company may have observed a total of six drone overflights over Mechernich between Thursday evening and Friday morning.

The Bundeswehr facility stores equipment and spare parts in an underground depot located 130 metres below ground and covering approximately 30,000 square metres — an area roughly equivalent to four football fields.

The site also houses components of the US-made Patriot air defence system, which can intercept ballistic and cruise missiles as well as aircraft.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy travelled to Washington last week to meet US President Donald Trump as Ukraine seeks additional Patriot missiles. The systems are among those capable of intercepting Russia’s most advanced missiles.

The latest drone incident occurred two days after authorities detected a drone carrying an explosive device at Leipzig Airport in eastern Germany, a strategically important hub for military equipment.

According to Bild, a driver working at the airport spotted the drone flying at low altitude near Ukrainian cargo aircraft. He reportedly seized the drone and held it on the ground until police explosives experts arrived.

Shortly afterwards, a second unidentified flying object reportedly struck a cargo aircraft operated by German logistics company DHL during a diversion manoeuvre around the airport.

On Wednesday, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt warned of a “new dimension of threat” involving a possible “hybrid attack scenario”, although he did not identify any suspects.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz convened the National Security Council on Friday.

European governments, particularly Germany, use the term “hybrid warfare” to describe a range of hostile activities, including sabotage, disinformation, cyberattacks and espionage, which they associate primarily with Russia.
