Two Doctors Taken to Prosecutor in Handcuffs Over Investigation Into Giorgos Mazonakis’ Death

Two doctors from the private clinic in Kolonaki where Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis died have been taken to the prosecutor’s office at the Evelpidon courts in Athens as the investigation into his death intensifies.

Doctors Ilias Theodoropoulos and Ioanna Gaka were transferred from Kypseli Police Station to the judicial authorities on Friday, September 11, in handcuffs.

According to Greek media reports, authorities have opened a case against the two doctors over the alleged offence of deadly exposure, as investigators examine the circumstances surrounding Mazonakis’ final hours.

The arrests follow an extensive police operation at the clinic on Karneadou Street in Kolonaki, which began on Thursday morning.

Police reportedly seized a large volume of material during the search, including documents, computers, hard drives and other digital storage devices, as well as files and medication found at the premises.

Investigation focuses on Mazonakis’ final hours

Investigators are examining evidence gathered from witness statements, security camera footage and equipment used at the clinic.

Particular attention has reportedly focused on footage that may clarify the timing of Mazonakis’ arrival at the clinic and what happened during the hours before he suffered the cardiac arrest that led to his death.

Authorities are also examining the clinic’s use and licensing of plasmapheresis equipment, with expert testimony forming part of the investigation.

Two specialists reportedly told police that plasmapheresis should be carried out strictly within a hospital environment because patients can experience potentially serious haemodynamic instability during the procedure.

The significance of the equipment and its use is now being examined alongside the other evidence collected by investigators.

Cause of death remains undetermined

Meanwhile, the exact cause of Mazonakis’ death has not yet been established.

The initial forensic examination did not reach a definitive conclusion about what caused the cardiac arrest that preceded his death.

Further answers are expected from toxicological and histological examinations, which could provide additional evidence about the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against the two doctors have yet to be determined by the courts.
