by Ikhwan Zulkaflee · The Rakyat Post · JoinThe fate of Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman will only be known on July 13 after the Federal Court of Malaysia postponed delivering its decision in the prosecution’s appeal against his acquittal in a corruption case.
According to Malaysiakini, Court of Appeal President Datuk Abu Bakar Jais, who sat on the bench this morning, informed those present that one of the presiding judges, Datuk Che Ruzima Ghazali, was on medical leave.
The Federal Court had initially been scheduled to deliver its verdict today in the Attorney General’s Chambers’ appeal against the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit the Muar MP.
On June 25 last year, the Court of Appeal overturned Syed Saddiq’s conviction, clearing him of the corruption charges.
The 33-year-old had earlier been convicted by the High Court on Nov 9, 2023, and sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment, two strokes of the cane and a RM10 million fine.
Syed Saddiq was charged in 2021 with four offences, including one count under Section 403 of the Penal Code for allegedly misappropriating RM120,000 from the Bersatu Youth Enterprise Maybank Islamic Berhad account by instructing Rafiq Hakim Razali to dispose of the funds between April 8 and 21, 2018.
The Federal Court’s decision on July 13 will determine whether the Court of Appeal’s acquittal stands or whether the prosecution’s appeal succeeds.
