UK’s Starmer backs down on limits to Mandelson document release – POLITICO

LONDON — Keir Starmer bowed to rebel Labour MP pressure to allow a U.K. parliamentary committee to see all the documents relating to Peter Mandelson’s appointment as British ambassador to Washington.

The British Prime Minister had promised to release material relevant to the former Labour peer’s nomination to the top diplomatic post — but initially said there would be exemptions on national security and international relations grounds.

Late on Wednesday U.K. ministers agreed to refer the documents to the U.K. Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee after Starmer’s own MPs threatened to rebel in a House of Commons vote on the plans.
