ADC Coalition: Labour Party Faction Gives Peter Obi 48 Hours To Resign
by Richard Ogunsile · Naija NewsThe Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to its presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, to resign from the party following his alignment with a newly formed opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Naija News reported earlier that Obi was among the top political figures who met on Wednesday to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the coalition party to oust President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
However, in a statement signed and issued on Thursday in Abuja, the Abure-led faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, warned that Obi’s support for the coalition directly contradicts the position of the faction which has distanced itself from the alliance, describing its members as “power mongers” and “frustrated politicians.”
“Labour Party has consistently said it is not part of the coalition,” the statement read.
“Therefore, any of our members who is part of the coalition is given within 48 hours to formally resign his membership of the party.”
“Desperate Politicians Can’t Birth a New Nigeria” — Ifoh
Ifoh did not hold back in his criticism of the coalition, warning Nigerians that the often-repeated slogan of a “new Nigeria” was nothing but a ruse, considering the people behind it.
“We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party,” he alleged.
“We are also aware that a number of them have refused to defect with him.”
The LP chieftain said the coalition comprises individuals responsible for Nigeria’s past misgovernance and accused them of using the platform to “relaunch themselves into the circle of power.”
“Nearly 70 per cent of the Nigerian population is youths who are tired of the old order,” he noted.
“The new Nigeria that the youths are dreaming of is not what can be realised from what we are seeing in the coalition.”
‘One Leg in, One Leg Out’ Politics Will Not Be Tolerated
The Labour Party warned that it will no longer tolerate divided loyalties, stressing that members cannot belong to two political platforms simultaneously.
“Labour Party is not available for people with dual agenda, people with deceptive persona,” Ifoh stated.
“In the morning they claim to be in the Labour Party, and in the evening they are in coalition.”
He urged all party faithful to remain loyal to the structure and prepare for future elections under the Labour Party’s banner.
Meanwhile, Peter Obi has reaffirmed his commitment to the coalition of opposition parties, describing it as a necessary platform to rescue Nigeria in 2027.
In a post shared via his official 𝕏 handle, the former Anambra State Governor said: “No one group can change Nigeria alone. To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls—even when those bridges are uneasy.”
He revealed that the coalition has formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the 2027 elections, with Senator David Mark as National Chairman and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as Secretary.
Obi added: “Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together… ensuring Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first.”
