Sallah Durbar In Doubt As Emir Of Kano, Sanusi Meets Gov Yusuf’s Delegation
by Richard Ogunsile · Naija NewsHours after hosting top government officials to an Iftar at his palace, the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, held a closed-door meeting with a delegation representing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, further fuelling speculation over the state’s stance in the lingering emirship dispute.
The meeting, which took place at the historic Gidan Rumfa palace, comes at a critical time as tensions continue to trail the unresolved tussle over the Kano emirship stool.
The Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirmed the development in a Facebook post early Wednesday.
He disclosed that members of the delegation included the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ibrahim, and the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Sulaiman Wali Sani.
“Shortly after the Iftar at Emir’s Palace, the Governor’s delegation had a closed-door meeting with His Highness,” Dawakin Tofa wrote.
The development comes as Kano prepares for the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, particularly the iconic Sallah Durbar, a centuries-old cultural procession that attracts widespread attention.
However, the event has been thrown into uncertainty following conflicting signals from government officials on whether it will hold this year, amid the unresolved legal battle between Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero.
While Governor Yusuf reinstated Sanusi II in 2024, Bayero has continued to challenge his removal in court, leaving the emirship stool in a state of legal and political flux.
Although the Kano State Government recently hinted that the crisis may soon be resolved, Tuesday night’s Iftar and the subsequent closed-door meeting appear to reinforce growing alignment between the state government and Sanusi II, Naija News reports.
