Pyidaungsu Hluttaw elects Senior General Min Aung Hlaing as Myanmar’s 11th President

The Union Parliament has elected Senior General Min Aung Hlaing as Myanmar’s 11th President, according to sources.

The presidential election ceremony was held on April 3 at the Union Parliament Assembly Hall, where the Presidential Election Committee—comprising all parliament members—selected three Vice Presidents. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing was nominated by elected Pyithu Hluttaw representatives, Daw Nan Ni Ni Aye (Kayin State Hluttaw proportional representation constituency-1) by elected Amyotha Hluttaw representatives, and U Nyo Saw (Cocogyun constituency) by military representatives.

The Union Parliament consists of 263 elected Pyithu Hluttaw representatives, 157 elected Amyotha Hluttaw representatives, and 166 military representatives, totaling 586 members, including two absentees.

In the presidential election, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing secured 429 votes, while U Nyo Saw received 126 votes and Daw Nan Ni Ni Aye obtained 29 votes.

Following the vote, the Speaker of the Union Parliament announced that Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, having received the highest number of votes, was elected President. U Nyo Saw was appointed Vice President 1, while Daw Nan Ni Ni Aye was named Vice President 2, based on the vote count.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, aged 70, studied law at the University of Yangon before joining the Defence Services Academy in 1974 as part of the 19th intake. He later served in various roles in the Tatmadaw and became the eighth Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services.

After the military takeover on February 1, 2021, he held multiple key positions, including Chairman of the State Administration Council, Prime Minister of the Caretaker Government, Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission, Acting President, and Commander-in-Chief. He retired as Commander-in-Chief on March 30, 2026, and was elected Vice President by Pyithu Hluttaw representatives on March 31.

He was also awarded an honorary Doctorate of Public Administration (Honoris Causa) by the University of Yangon on February 5, 2026.

Vice President U Nyo Saw, 67, is also a graduate of the Defence Services Academy (19th intake) and has held senior positions in the Tatmadaw, including Chairman of the Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC), attaining the rank of General. After 2021, he served as an advisor to the Senior General and the Prime Minister. He was elected from Cocogyun Township in the 2025 general election.

Vice President Daw Nan Ni Ni Aye, 57, holds a degree in Zoology, along with qualifications in Computer Science and Information Science. A former civil servant, she worked as a teacher and university instructor before entering politics with the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) in 2010. She served two terms in the Amyotha Hluttaw and currently holds positions in the party’s central leadership and as a state party chair. She was elected under the proportional representation system in Kayin State in the 2025 election.

Since gaining independence from Britain on January 4, 1948, Myanmar has had 11 presidents. The first was Sao Shwe Thaik, followed by U Ba Oo, Mahn Win Maung, U Ne Win, U San Yu, U Sein Lwin, Dr. Maung Maung, U Thein Sein, U Htin Kyaw, and U Win Myint, with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing now serving as the 11th President.
