Iran US War LIVE: EAM S Jaishankar held talks with Iran Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday as India hosts the 18th BRICS Summit. He said they held a detailed conversation, discussing the situation in West Asia and the implications of the war. The war has virtually halted all trade through the Strait of Hormuz, the maritime chokepoint through which about a half of India’s oil imports, 60 per cent of its LNG imports and a staggering 90 per cent of its LPG imports passed through. Since the beginning of the conflict on February 28, India has taken host of measures to offset the impact of the war on energy consumers. On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked citizens to take steps to offset the impact of the energy supply disruptions due to the war in West Asia. While global oil prices increased by about 50 percent, Indian oil companies have cushioned the blow on domestic consumers. However, prices have gradually kept increasing, and in the lasted, oil companies on Friday announced a hike of Rs 3 per litre for petrol and diesel.

Tehran established an agency to formalise the toll collection. In the meantime, the US Navy has maintained its blockade on Iranian ports.

Iran-US War LIVE: 'We don’t want Iran to have a nuclear weapon, we want the Straits open,' Trump outlines US demands

US President Donald Trump has reiterated the US' key demands as peace talks remain stalled, “We feel very similarly about how we want this to end. We don’t want them to have a nuclear weapon, and we want the Straits open.”

Iran has been refusing to end its nuclear program or relinquish its stockpile of enriched uranium.

Meanwhile, trade along the Strait of Hormuz has remained halted, as global The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has been targeting vessels bypassing Tehran’s restrictions, forcing them to take an alternate route through its territorial waters and pay hefty tolls.

Iran established the Persian Gulf Strait Authority, a government agency to formalise the toll collection. Tehran has also repeatedly demanded that the US recognise Iran's sovereignty over the Strait. As part of its initial peace proposal, Iran proposed a tolling mechanism under which revenues would be shared between Iran and Oman, arguing that the Strait lies within the territorial waters of the two countries.

While the Strait of Hormuz may lie in the territorial waters of the two countries, both westbound and eastbound shipping lanes — under the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) — lie entirely within the territorial waters of Oman.

Meanwhile, the US Navy has maintained its blockade on Iranian ports. Trump said Washington will focus on restoring maritime traffic and returning the status quo to pre-war levels.

Iran-US War LIVE: 'It's more for public relations than it is for anything else,' Trump on retrieving enriched uranium from Iran

When asked in the interview about the necessity to retrieve enriched uranium from Iran, US President Donald Trump suggested the quest was not necessary except for public relations purposes.

"I don't think it's necessary except from a public relations standpoint," Trump said in the interview.

"I just feel better if I got it, actually. But ‌it's, I think, it's more for public relations than it is for anything else."

The U.S., one of nine countries in the world recognized as having nuclear weapons, insists that Iran should move its highly enriched uranium stockpile abroad and renounce domestic enrichment. Tehran, which does not have nuclear weapons, denies seeking them but says it has the right to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, including enrichment, as a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Iranian parliamentary spokesman Ebrahim Rezaei said on Tuesday that the country could ‌enrich uranium up to 90% purity, a level considered weapons-grade, if Iran was attacked again. (Reuters)
