The relations between both the countries hit a new low Friday, after the Zelenskyy’s meeting with Trump and US Vice-President J D Vance turned into a heated argument.
During the diplomatic meeting expected to finalise a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, Trump pressured Zelenskyy to accept a ceasefire and accused him of stalling negotiations. Standing firm on his stance, Zelenskyy said Ukraine cannot change attitude towards Russia on a dime and added the spat with Trump is not good for both sides. Several world leaders including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese rallied in support of Ukraine. Scholz said, “No one wants peace more than the citizens of Ukraine! That is why we are jointly seeking the path to a lasting and just peace. Ukraine can rely on Germany – and on Europe.”
The rift between Trump and Zelenskyy has ballooned in recent days as US officials attempted to negotiate the minerals deal with Ukraine. In last few weeks, Trump told his closest advisers that he does not like the way in which Zelenskyy has tried to drum up US support for Ukraine, claiming he used showmanship to try and win points with the media and Congress.

Trump-Zelenskyy showdown: Key takeaways
The shouting match between the leaders of the US and Ukraine was something very few had seen before. The outcome was a disaster for Zelenskyy. Here’s what to make of his meeting in the Oval Office
First, none of the global norms that are associated with the behaviour of a world leader can be reasonably expected of Trump. His speech, behaviour, comments, and social media posts run counter to those norms.
Second, the world is now dealing with a US President who wants above all to be seen to be respected in front of his domestic audience. World leaders who understand that have swallowed their pride, zipped their mouths, smiled, and obliged him.
This happened with Jordan’s King Abdullah II, when Trump talked about his plan for Gaza. The King did not contradict the President or provoke him in front of the TV crews. What he did instead was to issue a statement, via a tweet, rejecting the plan, after he got out of the White House.
Other leaders, such as President Emmanuel Macron of France, and even Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the UK, have been skilful and respectful. The French President smiled and held President Trump’s hand, but he also politely corrected him about Europe’s contribution to the Ukrainian war effort.
Third, the Trump-Zelenskyy showdown has shown that each country is now on their own. Bilateral transactionalism is at its peak now. The new Washington doesn’t respect the norms and rules of the past, and each country has to look out for their own interests — they can no longer depend on the US or its leadership. The reliability of the American establishment and power is no longer there.
Fourth, South Block would be heaving a sigh of relief that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was able to navigate these choppy waters during his visit to the White House last month. The contentious issues of illegal immigration and high tariffs were raised respectfully, and the Indian side was able to dodge the Trump bullet.
That the Indian side came out of the White House with a target of a deal by this Fall, and that both sides decided to work on lowering tariffs, was perceived — and can be projected — as a victory by both sides. Read more

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni urges for US, EU meet
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni noted that a division between the US and European Union will not be beneficial and urged for a summit. Meloni said, "Every division of the West makes us all weaker and favours those who would like to see the decline of our civilisation. Not of its power or influence, but of the principles that founded it, first and foremost freedom. A division would not benefit anyone. What is needed is an immediate summit between the United States, European states and allies to talk frankly about how we intend to deal with the great challenges of today, starting with Ukraine, which we have defended together in recent years, and those that we will be called upon to face in the future. This is the proposal that Italy intends to make to its partners in the coming hours."

Trump-Zelenskyy Meeting Live Updates: Russia the aggressor, Ukraine the agressed, says Emmanuel Macron
French President Emmanuel Macron hit out at Russia after US President Donald Trump's showdown with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Macron said, "Russia is the aggressor, and Ukraine is the aggressed people. I think we were all right to help Ukraine and sanction Russia three years ago, and to continue to do so. We, that is the United States of America, the Europeans, the Canadians, the Japanese and many others. And we must thank all those who have helped and respect those who have been fighting since the beginning. Because they are fighting for their dignity, their independence, their children and the security of Europe. These are simple things, but they're good to remember at times like these, that's all."

Trump-Zelenskyy Meeting Live Updates: No security guarantees for Ukraine in the deal
The deal both Trump and Zelenskyy failed to make, was supposed to open Ukraine's vast mineral wealth to the United States but does not include explicit American security guarantees for Ukraine, a disappointment for Kyiv. Trump says the presence of Americans in business would serve as a form of guarantee.
How much the deal would be worth to the United States is not spelled out. Trump has said he expects to gain hundreds of billions of dollars. Zelenskyy has said he would not sign an agreement that would put his country in debt for generations.
Ukraine would contribute 50% of "all revenues earned from the future monetization of all relevant Ukrainian Government-owned natural resource assets" to a reconstruction fund jointly owned and managed by the United States and Ukraine.
The agreement does not specify how the funds would be spent, or identify specific assets it covers, though it says they would include deposits of minerals, oil and natural gas as well as infrastructure such as gas terminals and ports.

Trump Zelenskyy Meet Live Updates: 'Gambling with World War III' - The spat between Trump and Zelenskyy
A diplomatic meeting which started with politeness and smoothness turned into a showdown as US President Donald Trump pressurised Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to agree for a ceasefire in the ongoing Russia Ukraine war. Trump said, "people are dying, you're running low on soldiers."
Speaking about the mineral agreement, Trump said, "You're either going to make a deal, or we're out, and if we're out, you'll fight it out. I don't think it's going to be pretty," Trump told him.
"You don't have the cards. Once we sign that deal, you're in a much better position. But you're not acting at all thankful, and that's not a nice thing. I'll be honest. That's not a nice thing," Trump told Zelenskyy.
In response, Zelenskyy openly challenged Trump over his softer approach toward Russian President Vladimir Putin and urged him to "make no compromises with a killer."
"You are gambling with World War Three," Trump told Zelenskyy at one point, urging him to be more thankful.
