Trump-Xi trade deal live: US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are meeting in Busan, South Korea today to ease tensions after months of tariff threats and export restrictions that have unsettled global markets. Trump said he “could sign trade deal today”, and that the leaders “have already agreed to a lot of things,” as reported by Reuters. The face-to-face talks, their first since Trump’s return to office, come on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. According to AP, both leaders are seeking to prevent further economic fallout from their renewed trade war, which has seen China limit rare earth exports and Trump threaten 100 per cent tariffs on Chinese goods.

Signs of compromise: In the lead-up to the meeting, US officials signalled that Trump does not intend to impose the additional import tax he had threatened, while China has shown willingness to relax its rare earth curbs and resume soybean purchases, Reuters and AP reported. A “substantial framework” is expected to delay Beijing’s export restrictions for a year and revive US agricultural trade, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said he might lower tariffs related to China’s role in fentanyl production, saying, “I expect to be lowering that because I believe that they’re going to help us with the fentanyl situation.”

‘G2’ meeting: Analysts warn that the talks may deliver short-term stability rather than long-term solutions. “The proposed deal on the table fits the pattern we’ve seen all year: short-term stabilisation dressed up as strategic progress,” said Craig Singleton of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, as quoted by AP. Trump has dubbed the session the “G2” meeting, mentioning the US and China’s global economic clout.

Donald Trump Xi Jinping Meeting Live Updates: Trump calls XI 'tough negotiator', says 'could' sign a deal

US President Donald Trump met face-to-face with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, offering the leaders of the world’s two largest economies an opportunity to steady relations after months of trade tensions. Trump’s renewed use of tariffs since returning to the White House for a second term, along with China’s retaliatory restrictions on rare earth exports, has heightened the importance of the talks.

“We’re going to have a very successful meeting, I have no doubt,” Trump said as he and Xi shook hands. The US president described Xi as a “very tough negotiator,” adding that while a formal deal “could” be signed, the two leaders already share a “great understanding” of one another.

Donald Trump Xi Jinping Meeting Live Updates: Trump suggests he may negotiate with Xi over exports of Nvidia AI chip

A leading Republican voice in Congress on China policy said on Wednesday that selling Nvidia's best AI chip to China "would be akin (to) giving Iran weapons grade uranium", as experts argued it would shrink the American advantage in artificial intelligence.

House Select Committee on China Chairman John Moolenaar said in a post on X that he told the administration, "we cannot sell the latest advanced AI chips to our country's primary adversary."

His comment came after President Donald Trump opened the door on Wednesday to Nvidia selling a lesser version of its Blackwell AI chip to China.

U.S. trade experts said giving China the chips could effectively spell the end of U.S. chip export restrictions, which were put in place in 2022 to make sure Beijing's military would not benefit from American technology, and to slow the development of China's AI efforts.

"If we decide to export B30As, it would dramatically shrink the U.S.'s main advantage it currently has over China in AI," said Tim Fist, co-author of an analysis of the impact of allowing China the B30A chip, a downgraded version of Nvidia's state-of-the-art Blackwell chip.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and 11 Democratic senators also urged Trump on Wednesday to not lift restrictions on AI chips and American technology in pursuit of a trade deal.
