Meanwhile, Congress candidate Rahul Mamkootathil has won the Palakkad seat by a margin of 18,840 votes against BJP candidate C Krishnakumar, who was ahead in the earlier rounds of the bypolls. Additionally, the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) received a big boost with its candidate U R Pradeep winning the Chelakkara Assembly bypoll by 12,000 votes.

In her first public appearance after the landmark victory, Priyanka Gandhi visited party president Mallikarjun Kharge at his residence, expressing her gratitude for his support throughout the campaign. She vowed to “fight for the issues” as the upcoming Parliament session begins. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), earlier, she said that she was “overwhelmed” by the victory, promising to “represent the hopes and dreams of Wayanad in Parliament.”  She said, “I am deeply grateful for the trust you have placed in me… Thank you for this honour and, above all, for the immense love you’ve shown me.” She also thanked her family, campaign workers, and the UDF coalition. “To my brother, Rahul, you are the bravest of them all… thank you for showing me the way and having my back, always!”, she added.

The Wayanad voters did not disappoint the Gandhi family for the third time in a row, picking Priyanka to succeed her brother Rahul Gandhi. She defeated the nominees fielded by the ruling Left and the BJP.

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had won back-to-back electoral contests from this Kerala hill constituency in 2019 and 2024. However, he vacated it after winning from the family's Uttar Pradesh bastion Rae Bareilly this year, following which the party fielded Priyanka. And she triumphed with an impressive margin of over 4.10 lakh votes, demonstrating Wayanad's preference for the Gandhi family.

Besides, the party retained the Palakkad Assembly seat. Chelakkara, a left stronghold, was retained by the CPI (M).

The results of the by-polls held for the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat and two Assembly constituencies in Kerala have come as a boost for the Congress-led UDF, a relief for the ruling CPI(M)-headed LDF, and a disappointment for the BJP-led NDA.

While Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra comfortably cruised to her maiden electoral win from the Wayanad seat, surpassing the 3.64-lakh lead achieved by her brother Rahul Gandhi in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls earlier this year, the party's candidate in the Palakkad Assembly segment, Rahul Mamkootathil, secured a victory with a thumping margin.

Priyanka won Wayanad constituency by a margin of over 4.1 lakh votes against LDF candidate, CPI's Sathyan Mokeri. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls in Wayanad, CPI's Annie Raja secured second place with 2,83,023 votes, while BJP's K Surendran finished third with 1,41,045 votes. However, both fronts were unable to replicate their performance in the by-poll, despite a reduced voter turnout in the hill constituency.

Youth Congress state president Mamkootathil won the Palakkad seat with a margin of over 18,000 votes, even making inroads into BJP stronghold areas, delivering a shock to the saffron party, which had been hoping to win the seat after finishing second in the past few elections.

Although the Congress significantly reduced the large margin secured by the Left in the Chelakkara seat during the 2021 polls, it did not achieve the vote share it had garnered during the Lok Sabha elections in the Assembly segment. "The excellent victories in Wayanad and Palakkad, along with the strong performance in Chelakkara, are the results of the collective teamwork within the UDF and Congress. This victory is dedicated to that teamwork," Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, V D Satheesan, told reporters in Kochi.

Pradeeep defeated Ramya Haridas of the Congress, which last won the seat in 1991.

This outcome is crucial for the CPI(M) as a slip would be construed as a fallout of the strong anti-incumbency against the eight-year-old Pinarayi Vijayan regime, an oft-repeated claim of the Opposition Congress in the run-up to the bypoll.

Ruling LDF candidate U R Pradeep won the Chelakkara Assembly bypoll in Kerala on Saturday by defeating Congress-UDF's Ramya Haridas by a margin of 12,201 votes.

Pradeep, who had maintained a steady lead since the beginning of the counting, garnered 64,827 votes, while Haridas had to settle for 52,626 votes, according to Election Commission figures.

The BJP-NDA nominee, K Balakrishnan, finished in third position with 33,609 votes, the figures showed. Though six candidates were in the fray in Chelakkara, the main contest was between Pradeep and Haridas.

A bypoll was necessitated in the Chelakkara segment, a Left stronghold for years, as the then MLA and former Devaswom Minister K Radhakrishnan was elected to the Lok Sabha earlier this year.

First time’s the charm: Priyanka crosses Rahul Gandhi’s majority in Wayanad

Congress candidate Priyanka Gandhi is poised for a big win in her maiden electoral battle from Kerala’s Wayanad Lok Sabha seat, early trends suggest.

When 3,33,298 votes were counted till 10.40 am on Saturday, Priyanka had bagged 64.12 percent of the votes, while her rivals Sathyan Mokeri of LDF and Navy Haridas of BJP got 21.96 per cent and 12.34 per cent, respectively. The total polled votes in the constituency, which went to the by-election on November 13, were 9,52,543.

The turnout had raised concerns in the Congress camp, but trends suggest the Congress-led UDF managed to bring its voters to polling booths.

Priyanka had gone to every panchayat with at least one corner meeting as part of her campaign, much more than her brother Rahul Gandhi, who held only a few programmes in the constituency when he contested in April 2024 and 2019. Besides, Priyanka stayed back at the constituency on polling day and visited more booths than any other candidate.
