Goa to move Supreme Court against HC order stalling ST seat reservation process

The Goa government will approach the Supreme Court this week, challenging a Bombay High Court order that stalled the process of identifying the Scheduled Tribe (ST) population in the state for political reservation ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Goa NRI Commissioner Narendra Sawaikar said the government would seek a vacation of the stay and file a Special Leave Petition (SLP) by Wednesday.

The High Court had restrained the Census Commissioner from notifying ST population estimates, observing that such figures could only be determined on the basis of the first official Census conducted after 2026. The order has cast uncertainty over the proposed reservation of four Assembly constituencies for the ST community. The legislation enabling the determination of the tribal population and readjustment of constituencies was enacted in August 2025 and came into force in August 2026.

National Conference leader Aga Ruhullah Mehdi expected to resign shortly as Srinagar MP

National Conference MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi is expected to resign from the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat on Tuesday November 3, in a setback for the Omar Abdullah-led party.

On October 30, the office of the MP announced that Mehdi will resign from the party and his Srinagar Lok Sabha seat on November 3 in a post on X. He is scheduled to address the public at Behisht-e-Zehra Park in Budgam on the death anniversary of deceased cleric Aga Syed Mehdi.

In the statement, Ruhullah accused the Omar Abdullah-led leadership of treating Jammu and Kashmir as a family estate and reneging on promises made in the party’s manifesto, including the restoration of Article 370, the release of prisoners and protection of people's rights. He said he would surrender the Lok Sabha seat rather than remain associated with what he described as a betrayal of those promises.

Replying to a question by news agency PTI on how sure he is about his decision in an earlier interview, he said, "As sure as I was when I announced it and nothing has changed ever since. Things remain the same, so I don't see there's any reason for me to change my decision. I am resigning on November the 3rd as I have announced it, and let's see how things turn out after that. "Both from the party as well as from the Parliament as well", he added.
