DUSU election counting is underway, with the Round 17 results showing ABVP’s Yash leading the presidential contest with 20,151 votes against NSUI’s Meena at 19,651. Deepanshu is leading the vice-presidential contest with 26,341 votes, while ABVP’s Riya is ahead in the secretary’s post with 17,279 votes. In the joint secretary’s contest, SCS’s Vishesh Yadav is narrowly leading with 13,346 votes, followed by ABVP’s Lakshya with 13,342 and NSUI’s Gopal with 13,293 votes.

At the end of the 11th round of counting, the NSUI and ABVP were locked in a very close contest for the presidential post with the NSUI candidate Vijay Shankar Meena (13271 votes) was leading the race by a margin of 338 votes against the RSS-backed party’s Yash Dabas (12933 votes). Meanwhile, an Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen established a strong lead (17283 votes) for the vice president’s post.

The elections, which held significance in light of the recent student protests over the alleged paper leaks, saw 40.46 per cent voting. Among the major issues that were raised during this year’s campaign were student welfare, campus facilities, hostel accommodation and safety — which gained importance particularly after the collapse of a Satya Niketan PG building killed seven earlier this month.

As many as 1,000 electronic voting machines (EVMs) were deployed for the elections, of which 960 were used on polling day. After polling, the police transported the EVMs to the Multipurpose Hall, where they have now been opened and are being counted. As counting progresses, police personnel and paramilitary forces have been deployed at strategic points, while foot patrols, motorcycle teams and PCR vans are present across the campuses. The traffic curbs, announced in a university advisory, will remain in force on Saturday until the declaration of results.

The race for the president's post is a very close one. After nine rounds of counting, the NSUI's Vijay Meena is in the lead by one vote. Meena has received 10,888 votes while the ABVP's Yash Dabas has 10,887.

The counting of votes for the DUSU polls showed a split trend, with the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) candidate Vijay Meena closely following ABVP's Yash Dabas and Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen taking a huge margin lead for Vide President's post.

Even as ABVP's Riya Chhawdi remained ahead for the post of Secretary, SP-affiliated Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha candidate Vishesh Yadav securing more votes than any other at the end of 7th round of counting.

A look at the security arrangement in place for DUSU poll counting

More than 2,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed for the counting process. The security arrangement has been divided into five zones and 23 sectors, with an Assistant Commissioner of Police supervising each zone and an inspector-level officer overseeing each sector.

“Pickets and barricades have been placed at college gates and other strategic points to regulate movement and prevent unauthorised entry. Police teams, including foot patrols, motorcycle units and PCR vans, have been deployed across the campus to maintain surveillance and respond to any situation that may arise during the counting and declaration of results,” said Madhur Verma, Joint CP Central range and also the nodal officer for DUSU.
