Democratically governed Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory, has been waiting for months for US President Donald Trump to approve a new arms sales package ⁠worth ​some $14 billion, following up on a record $11 billion deal unveiled last December.

After meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing in May, Trump said he was keeping the latest arms sales package in abeyance. Trump has ​not ​mentioned the sale since last week's summit, ⁠saying only on Saturday that Xi understands his position on Taiwan.

Helicopter crashes in Canada, 4 people killed

A helicopter crashed Saturday southeast of the Canadian city of Montreal, killing all four people on board, police said.

Audrey-Anne Bilodeau, a spokesperson for Sûreté du Québec provincial police, said the helicopter reportedly experienced difficulties before crashing around 2.30 pm in the municipality of Sainte-Brigide-d'Iberville, which is roughly 50 kilometres (31 miles) southeast of Montreal.

Bessent thanks Iran’s neighbors for helping US pressure campaign

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent thanked Turkey, Oman and the United Arab Emirates, as well as the UK, for taking steps to restrict Iranian banking and aviation links, saying Washington’s economic pressure campaign was “delivering results.”

Bessent said the measures followed the launch of Operation Economic Outcast, under which the Treasury imposed sanctions targeting Iran’s financial and aviation sectors and dispatched teams to press other countries to take action.

Six dead after explosion destroys building in Athens

Six people have died after a two-storey residential building in a tourist area of central Athens collapsed, ⁠the ​Greek fire brigade said on Saturday, following an explosion that the mayor said was likely linked to gas infrastructure.

The explosion killed four Americans, US officials said.

Emergency crews in heavy gear and red helmets assisted ​by rescue ​dogs, cameras and sensors found the bodies ⁠of six people, fire brigade spokesman Vassilis Vathrakogiannis said in a televised briefing. They were looking for an ‌elderly couple who lived in one apartment and four tourists who were staying in another as they removed debris from the building.

The fire brigade's crime investigation unit was also on site to identify the cause of the blast after reports of a gas smell in an area that is home to hotels ⁠and short-term rentals.

Saudi FM says international community 'absent' in Gulf crisis

Saudi Arabia warned UN members Saturday that attempts to block Middle East waterways are a threat to global energy security and demanded the international community do more to defend freedom of navigation, AFP reported.

"The international community has been absent from assuming its responsibilities in confronting all that threatens international peace and security," Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan told the United Nations General Assembly.

Iran armed forces warn US against intervening in Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s armed forces warned the US against intervening in the Strait of Hormuz, saying Washington would be “slapped” if it did so.

“Americans dream of interfering in the Strait of Hormuz, and if they interfere in the Strait of Hormuz, they will be slapped,” armed forces spokesman Abolfazl Shekarchi said, according to the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim News Agency.

Yemen forces say Iranian Houthi weapons threaten Red Sea flights

Yemen’s government forces accused the Houthis of using Iranian air defence weapons that could threaten civilian and military aircraft flying over the Red Sea.

Brigadier General Majed al-Nazili, a spokesman for the government forces, said the weapons had been modified with assistance from experts from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and were being used against warplanes and cruise missiles.

Iraq seeks exemption from US ban on Iran airlines

The Iraqi government said Saturday it is in talks with the United States to seek an exemption from sanctions on Iranian airlines, which have disrupted travel for patients, students and pilgrims.
