Kofi Bentil calls for self-recognisance bail for Baffour Awuah
by Miss Naa · MyNewsGh.comVice President of IMANI Africa Kofi Bentil has called for Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah to be granted self-recognisance bail, saying the investigation into the MP should continue without requiring him to remain in custody.
Mr Bentil said Baffour Awuah should be allowed to submit himself to the investigative process while authorities work to establish the facts of the case.
“This is a clear case for self-recognisance bail. Let the process go through, get to the bottom of the matter and let’s resolve it and move on,” he said.
Baffour Awuah voluntarily surrendered to EOCO on October 1, following a High Court warrant authorising his arrest and searches connected to an ongoing investigation.
EOCO has said he is cooperating with investigators, while allegations involving financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering and tax-related offences remain under investigation.
Mr Bentil also questioned uncertainty surrounding reports of a possible Ghc50 million bail, saying the information available at the time was unclear.
Host Samson Lardy interrupted during the discussion to refer to the reported bail amount. Mr Bentil responded that he had seen information suggesting the figure was not confirmed.
“I’ve seen something that says that it’s not actually a 50 million something bail. We are not clear what is going on,” he said.
He stressed that he would not oppose the prosecution of anyone suspected of committing a crime, but maintained that investigations must follow a credible and fair process.
“If somebody commits a crime, me, I will not sit anywhere to ask that they be defended. I will say, go through the process,” he said.
However, Mr Bentil warned that a process perceived as dishonest could undermine confidence in the justice system.
He said granting Baffour Awuah self-recognisance bail would allow the investigation to proceed while ensuring that the MP’s rights were respected.
