Eugene Boakye Antwi cites NPP history to argue defeated General Secretaries should leave
by Miss Naa · MyNewsGh.comNPP General Secretary hopeful Eugene Boakye Antwi has cited the party’s history to argue that General Secretaries who lead the party into a losing general election have traditionally not been retained.
Mr Antwi said the current contest should therefore be viewed against what he described as an established pattern within the NPP.
“Every General Secretary who has lost a general election in our party has not been retained,” he said on Joy News.
He referred to successive changes in the position after election defeats, beginning with the party’s experience after the 1996 general election.
Mr Antwi said the General Secretary at the time was replaced and a new administration subsequently increased the party’s parliamentary representation.
He also cited later changes involving the party’s General Secretaries after election defeats.
He said the same pattern occurred after the 2008 election defeat, when a new General Secretary was brought in, and again after the 2012 election loss.
Mr Antwi also referred to the period after the 2020 election, when the NPP lost 32 parliamentary seats but retained power.
“2020, we lost 32 seats but 32 seats that we lost, he kept us in government, but even that the party came to Accra to step John Boadu down,” he said.
He therefore questioned what made the current situation different from previous instances in which the party changed its General Secretary after an election loss.
“So what is so special about this current General Secretary?” he asked.
The NPP’s current General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, is seeking another term in the October 3 national executive elections, where he faces Mr Antwi, Sylvester Tetteh and Charles Dwamena.
