NPP elections: Let the work begin here – Afenyo-Markin rallies NPP ahead of 2028
by Gabs · MyNewsGh.comMinority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to focus on unity, hard work and rebuilding relationships as it prepares for the 2028 general election.
Addressing party supporters at the NPP executive elections, Afenyo-Markin said the party must move beyond its past setbacks and reconnect with Ghanaians.
“Let us stop looking backwards. Let us stop looking sideways. Let us look ahead to the day in 2028 when the people of Ghana line up in the sun, in the rain and in their millions,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin called on party members at all levels to work towards rebuilding the NPP.
“Hard work, all of you. Hard work, all of you,” he said. He mentioned party members ranging from MPs and polling station officers to lecturers, traders, women and young people, urging them to contribute to the party’s reorganisation.
He also called for a different approach to critics of the party. “Let’s not attack our critics,” he said. “They may have opposed and said unpalatable things about us in 2024. But we can win their hearts if we demonstrate tolerance and inclusiveness.”
Afenyo-Markin also appealed to the NPP to improve its relationship with civil society groups that remain critical of the party.
“Let’s not be too hard on civil society groups who are still critical of us. Let’s rebuild relationships. Let’s reach out to them and bring our core back together,” he said.
He also presented a vision of the kind of Ghana the party wants to campaign for, mentioning employment for young graduates, better opportunities for farmers, timely payment for teachers, protection against flooding and an environment where journalists can express their views without fear.
“That is what we are fighting for. That is a victory,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin then called on the party to unite behind its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who won the NPP’s presidential primary in January 2026.
“Dr. Bawumia is one person. It is our collective duty to work for his victory in 2028,” he said.
He ended with three principles he said should guide the party’s work towards the election.
“Our watchwords must be humility, hard work and unity,” Afenyo-Markin said.
His call for unity comes as the NPP reorganises its structures ahead of 2028, with the party’s national executive elections forming part of that process.
