The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has said Ghana’s diplomatic relations with South Africa remain cordial despite concerns over xenophobic attacks involving foreign nationals.

Speaking on Joy FM, Mr Kwakye Ofosu said Ghana’s decision to assist some citizens affected by the attacks was aimed at protecting them and had not damaged the relationship between the two countries.

“Our relations remain cordial, as you have seen.

“We in Ghana have not done anything to muddy the relationship; we only had to take a step to protect our citizens from the attacks,” he said.

He explained that government had begun arrangements to bring some affected Ghanaians back home, with plans underway to assist more citizens who wish to return.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu added that Ghana had expressed concerns over the attacks but remained committed to maintaining cooperation with South Africa.

“Of course, we have indicated our displeasure about what is happening in South Africa; we hold the view that the South African government could have done more to guarantee the safety and security of Ghanaians in particular and other foreigners in South Africa in general,” he stated.
