NPP elections: We will defend our freedoms – Afenyo-Markin warns gov’t
by Gabs · MyNewsGh.comMinority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has demanded equal justice following the arrest of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Speaking on behalf of the Minority at the New Patriotic Party’s executive elections, Afenyo-Markin said the Minority would continue to defend its freedoms and hold the government accountable through lawful means.
He referred to the attempted arrest of Baffour Awuah at a courthouse after the MP had appeared as counsel in a bail application involving Salomey Awiti, a nurse and mother of three.
He said Baffour Awuah had since presented himself to EOCO after the agency secured a warrant for his arrest.
“We assure you all that we’ll defend our freedoms, insist on equal justice and pursue accountability through lawful democratic means,” Afenyo-Markin said.
“We ask for one law for all.” Afenyo-Markin said the Minority would not allow itself to be intimidated in Parliament.
“We, the mighty Minority, shall never be intimidated in Parliament. We will fight for you today, tomorrow, until we get victory 2028,” he said.
His comments come amid an ongoing EOCO investigation involving Baffour Awuah and transactions connected to SIC Life Savings and Loans. A High Court has authorised EOCO to arrest the MP and search and seize relevant documents.
Afenyo-Markin has previously questioned the practice of attempting arrests on court premises and called on the Chief Justice to examine the issue.
He said the Minority’s response would remain within constitutional and democratic channels.
