Police officer charged with murder over death of Central University law student
by Miss Naa · MyNewsGh.comGeneral Corporal Robert Katey Koranteng of the Ghana Police Service has been charged with murder after kicking a Yango motorbike during a pursuit that ended in a crash and the death of a 20-year-old Central University law student.
Koranteng, 34, was arraigned at the Adabraka District Court in Accra on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, over the death of Ivan Apprey Baidoo.
The prosecution alleges that Koranteng kicked the motorbike with his leg after the Old Tollbooth on the Tema Motorway, causing rider Samuel Wesley Arthur to lose control and crash into a concrete barrier.
Baidoo, who was travelling on the motorbike, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Tema General Hospital. Arthur survived and was treated before being discharged.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on August 27 after Baidoo boarded the Yango motorbike from Ashongman Estates to the East Legon Astroturf Park to play football.
The rider allegedly went through a red light at the UPSA traffic intersection while Koranteng, who was on duty, pursued him and signalled him to stop.
The prosecution said Arthur allegedly failed to stop and continued through the Okponglo traffic light and the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange before entering the Tema Motorway.
It was during the continued pursuit, according to the prosecution, that Koranteng allegedly kicked the motorbike, resulting in the crash.
The prosecution further alleges that the police officer did not stop or arrange immediate medical assistance for the victims before speeding away.
Good Samaritans later took Baidoo and Arthur to the Tema General Hospital.
Koranteng, who was stationed at the Traffic Management Enforcement Unit at the Police Headquarters, is accused of intentionally causing Baidoo’s death by unlawful harm, contrary to Section 46 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
