Why the court allowed Daddy Lumba’s funeral to proceed despite earlier halt
by Gabs · MyNewsGh.comThe Accra High Court has cleared the way for Daddy Lumba’s funeral to proceed on Saturday, December 13, 2025, after a dramatic legal dispute over the arrangements.
Daddy Lumba, the highlife legend who passed away on July 26, 2025, at age 60, has been at the centre of a complex family disagreement over who has the authority to lead and finance his burial.
The dispute initially led to a court injunction halting all funeral preparations.
The earlier injunction restrained the family head, Kofi Owusu, from organising the funeral and barred Transitions Funeral Home from releasing the musician’s body.
The ruling followed claims that Lumba’s immediate maternal family had been sidelined during planning, despite Akan customs that usually grant them authority over funeral rites.
In an emergency sitting, the court recalled all lawyers and issued a fresh directive.
It required the applicants, including members of the maternal family, to deposit GH¢2 million by 2 p.m. on December 12, 2025, as security to cover potential costs arising from the delay.
The judge noted that, while the applicants’ concerns were valid, maintaining the injunction without financial security could unfairly burden the respondents.
The court ruled that failure to meet the GH¢2 million deadline would automatically lift the injunction.
After the applicants did not make the payment, the legal barrier was removed, allowing preparations for the burial to continue as originally scheduled.
This ruling balances respect for customary rights with practical considerations, ending a legal standoff that had delayed the funeral of one of Ghana’s most celebrated musicians.
