ECOWAS unanimously endorses Mahama for AU Chairmanship 2027

President John Dramani Mahama has been confirmed as ECOWAS’s nominee for the African Union Chairmanship for 2027.

The ECOWAS Council of Ministers delivered a unanimous endorsement during its meeting in Abuja, agreeing to put him forward as the bloc’s sole candidate when the AU’s rotating leadership returns to West Africa.

The AU Chairmanship rotates yearly among Africa’s five regions. The current chair, Angola’s President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, assumed the role in February 2025 for Southern Africa.

In backing Mr Mahama, the Council cited his international stature and Ghana’s long-standing influence within ECOWAS.

Ministers stressed that a unified candidate strengthens the bloc’s chances of securing top positions across continental and global institutions.

The endorsement now moves to the Authority of Heads of State and Government, which is expected to adopt the declaration at its meeting on Sunday.
