I will not sit in the car – Baffour Awuah explains why he resisted alleged EOCO arrest
by Miss Naa · MyNewsGh.comManhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has shared that a woman who identified herself as an Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) official firmly held his wrist during an alleged attempt to arrest him.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, Mr Awuah said the woman’s grip was so tight that he had to struggle to free himself.
“She firmly held my wrist, with the greatest of respect. I’ve never come across a woman that strong before,” he said.
“She held my hand so tight, so firmly that I had to wriggle myself from her hand.”
Mr Awuah said he offered to drive the woman to EOCO himself, but she refused. He then asked her to produce an identification card to prove that she worked for EOCO, but said she could not provide one.
“What even shows you are from EOCO? She couldn’t even produce it,” he said.
The MP said the incident made him suspect that he could be the target of an abduction.
“I thought that, Look, this is one of the kidnappings that have been going on, illegal, this is one of the kidnappings, state-sponsored kidnappings that have been going on, and so I will not sit in the car,” he said.
Mr Awuah insisted that he had no problem appearing before EOCO if the proper process was followed.
“When EOCO is ready to do the right thing, I will go there. I’m not afraid of anything,” he said.
He also rejected suggestions that he went to Parliament to evade a lawful arrest, describing the attempted arrest as unlawful.
“This is an unlawful arrest. This is an unlawful arrest. An attempt to abduct me by persons who don’t want to work with the law, and so it is not wrong if I’m seeking sanctuary,” he said.
“In fact, you seek sanctuary against kidnappers, and so if I’m seeking sanctuary, it is not wrong.”
Mr Awuah further said the woman wanted to prevent him from getting into his vehicle and instead put him in the vehicle of the officials.
“She was insistent on resisting me from sitting in my car, but would rather arrest me like a common criminal and put me in their car,” he said.
