Kofi Bentil describes Baffour Awuah’s EOCO case as ‘pure politics’
by Miss Naa · MyNewsGh.comIMANI Africa Vice President Kofi Bentil has accused state authorities of using the investigation into Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah as a tool for political revenge, describing the case as “pure politics” and a “power play”.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Mr Bentil questioned why EOCO had become involved in a dispute concerning legal fees allegedly agreed between a lawyer and his client, arguing that the basis of the investigation and any complaint against the MP should be made clear.
“I am struggling to find where the problem is,” he said, adding that he did not know whether SIC Savings and Loans had lodged a complaint against Baffour Awuah.
Host Samson Lardy interrupted to point out that it was possible the company had made a complaint. Mr Bentil agreed, but insisted that any such complaint should be central to the case.
“It is very possible, but then that should be front and centre. And what is the complaint and what is the charge?” he asked.
Mr Bentil said that where a client had agreed to pay a lawyer and had made the payment, the grounds for a criminal investigation needed to be clearly established.
He linked the case to a broader concern about the use of state institutions against political opponents, referring to a video of EOCO’s boss Raymond Acher that had resurfaced on social media.
Samson Lardy interjected that the video dated back to 2023, and Mr Bentil acknowledged that it was an earlier recording.
He argued that the video, wherein, Raymond is heard saying he would exact vengeance on the NPP when the NDC comes to power, alongside the current investigation, reinforced his view that the case was politically motivated.
“Nobody is in doubt that this is not about some legal fees or anything. This is pure revenge, pure politics, pure power play,” he said.
Mr Bentil maintained that anyone suspected of committing a crime should be allowed to go through the legal process, but said the process must be credible and fair.
“Where the process has patently, clearly, manifestly been shown not to be an honest process,” he said, “we are hurting ourselves in our own legal process.”
