Kofi Bentil compares Baffour Awuah’s detention with Yaw Ampofo Ankrah’s racketeering case

Vice President of IMANI Africa Kofi Bentil has questioned why Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah is being held by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), while Yaw Ampofo Ankrah is involved in half-million-dollar racketeering case has been allowed to walk free.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Mr Bentil compared the two cases to challenge what he described as inconsistencies in the way suspected economic crimes are handled.

He referred to reports that a person connected to an alleged racket involving more than US$500,000 had been suspended from the National Sports Council but was not detained.

“This is racketeering worth over half a million dollars. The person (Yaw Ampofo Ankrah) was suspended, left to go home, walk around,” he said.

Host Samson Lardy briefly interrupted as Mr Bentil referred to the reported case, after which the IMANI Africa vice president returned to Baffour Awuah’s detention and the legal fees at the centre of the investigation.

“We are talking about a million or so of legal fees agreed between a client and somebody. And they went through it,” he said.

Mr Bentil questioned why a transaction involving legal fees should result in the MP being held in custody, particularly when the precise complaint and alleged criminal conduct had not been clearly established in the discussion.

He argued that the contrast raised questions about the priorities of law enforcement agencies and whether similar standards were being applied across cases.

Mr Bentil said investigations into alleged wrongdoing should proceed, but insisted that authorities must explain the basis for their actions and apply the law consistently.

He also criticised what he sees as a focus on political figures while other alleged economic crimes receive different treatment.
