Ghana Jollof: It is not sufficient to look at mobile money transactions – Barker-Vormawor
by Miss Naa · MyNewsGh.comLegal practitioner Oliver Barker-Vormawor has questioned whether mobile money transactions alone are enough to establish that people who allegedly sent money to Salomey Bafoh Awiti were financing criminal activity linked to Ghana Jollof.
He said investigators needed to establish a direct connection between the money allegedly received and the specific conduct they consider criminal.
“It is not sufficient to look at mobile money transactions on the person’s phone and tie that to their online conduct,” he said on JoyNews’ Newsfile.
“Unless you can establish more, that money was given for the person to come and make a conduct that the coup is happening, which I have found to be criminal, you cannot go about and say things like that.”
Barker-Vormawor was responding to claims that certain prominent people in society had allegedly funded Bafoh.
He said he had heard the names of government communicators Hassan Tampuli and Maurice Ampon being linked to the claims, but questioned why they had not been arrested if investigators had established a genuine connection between their conduct and the alleged criminal activity.
“But let’s be clear, if the police is saying that that is what their investigations have established, why haven’t those people themselves been picked up and arrested, if they believe that there is a genuine connection between their conduct and the criminal conduct they believe has happened in this particular case?” he asked.
“That’s what I want to see,” he said.
He warned that without that connection, publicly linking people to the alleged conduct could become part of the same political propaganda that many people have criticised.
“If not, it becomes part of the propaganda and things that we decry in the country,” he added.
