Abuja, FCT - A South West political support group for President Bola Tinubu has called for the resignation of finance minister and coordinating minister of the economy, Wale Edun.

In a statement on Monday, September 8, the South West Democratic Agenda for Tinubu 2027 accused Edun of failing to implement the 2025 budget and driving Nigeria into deeper fiscal distress.

Otunba Adedayo Adewole, the group's president, alleged that the capital budget implementation under the finance minister's stewardship stood at “zero per cent".

He described it as an unprecedented failure in the nation’s history.

“This is not a figure of speech, it is the stark reality of a failed economic team” the group’s president, Adewole, said in a statement.

Group says debt servicing, budget implementation stalled

The group said that despite government borrowing both at home and abroad, the Tinubu administration had yet to service domestic debts or begin the implementation of the 2025 Appropriation Act, even as the country enters September.

“The Buhari administration, for all its flaws, implemented its budget. Under Edun, Nigeria is drifting without any fiscal anchor,” Adewole said.

He said the non-performance of the capital budget meant Nigerians were being denied infrastructure such as roads, hospitals, schools, and power. He described the hardship facing citizens as “man-made and avoidable,” blaming poor policy choices and indifference to public suffering.

“This is not the Renewed Hope Nigerians were promised. This is renewed hardship,” he added.

National Assembly asked to act

The group asked the National Assembly to probe the development, warning the lawmakers against shielding anyone from responsibility.

“If the legislature allows this failure to pass without consequence, then it too will be complicit in the betrayal of Nigerians. The National Assembly passed the budget; it must now demand its implementation. Silence at this critical moment would amount to treachery against the people,” the group declared.

Tinubu told to act

While pledging loyalty to President Tinubu, the South West Democratic Agenda urged the president to act quickly to restore confidence in his economic team.

“Mr. President must remember that Nigerians voted for him, "Adewole said.

Tinubu told to reshuffle cabinet, sack service chiefs

In a related development, a coalition of northern political leaders has called on President Tinubu to reshuffle his cabinet, overhaul the security leadership, and deepen economic reforms to tackle what it described as worsening hardship and insecurity in the country.

The Northern Ethnic National Forum (NENF), a socio-political coalition of leaders from the 19 northern states, said Nigeria was facing “multi-dimensional crises” that required urgent action.

The NENF stated that several ministers in Tinubu’s cabinet were underperforming and lacked the necessary political capital to drive his “Renewed Hope” agenda.
